Micromechanical analysis of high fibre volume fraction polymeric laminates using micrograph-based representative volume element models

This work develops RVE-based finite element (FE) models to understand how the microstructure of Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) composites affects overall mechanical behaviour laminate. The represent a [0/90] configuration with random fibre packing sequence through thickness each ply, as well variation in cross-sectional shape fibres, both obtained from laminate cross section micrograph images. uncertainty interface properties and its effects on response is also investigated. assumed be viscoelastic-plastic transversely isotropic three-dimensional constitutive implemented user-defined subroutine LS-DYNA explicit FE code. Constituent are calibrated using experimental results UHMWPE single fibres generic thermoplastic polyurethane resin material. numerical generated by RVE validated against found open literature. Special focus was given in-plane shear out-of-plane compression laminates. Our can used inputs homogenised continuum level model, express effect uncertainties which propagate macro-scale response.
